Woodstock Mixed Martial Arts is the new name for the Young Hong Karate Institute. Building on over 40 years experience in Woodstock, IL, WMMA is commited to bringing the most up to date and effective martial arts skills to students of all ages. Our Little Dragons program starts children in the basics of balancing and moving in the martial arts - and students between the ages of 3 and 5 years old are welcome. Our next level is our Advancing Tigers program where students in the 4-6 year old range study real Mixed Martial Arts skills every week. Our Mixed Martial Arts program is the keystone of our school, bringing the world renowned Pro-Star Mixed Martial Arts program to Woodstock for the first time.
At WMMA, we focus on safety, teaching our techniques in a manner that allows for even our youngest students to learn without fear of injury. Safety is a part of every class that we teach - and we even introduce our students to safety skills that they can use in the real world, not just in our classroom.Moms and Dads love our classes, too - and not just because of the self-discipline and respect that the kids learn. Many of our parents join our programs, providing an opportunity to do something WITH their kids while showing them the value of physical exercise for all family members. We schedule our classes and have designed our workout space so that both children and adults can train together with utmost safety - no matter what level they are at.
Owners Carolyn and Kurt Schulenburg are both Founding Members of the Pro-Star program and train at an international level throughout the year. Mrs. Schulenburg is a Registered Nurse and her medical knowledge has not only helped design our classes and classroom, it's an extra layer of safety and security for all of our students. Mr. Schulenburg is certified public school teacher and also has been certified by the Martial Arts Teachers Association.
Training at the Woodstock Mixed Martial Arts school is an experience in Fun and Fitness - not Fighting - but the real world self-defense skills that we teach are the best available drawing on the kickboxing techniques from TaeKwonDo and Karate as well as Muay Thai fighting and Boxing. Grappling techniques from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo and wrestling are also an integral part of our program, providing our students with abilities far superior to a single method or school.We participate in national tournaments as well as holding our own in-school events.
We love our pool parties, parades, picnics and movie nights where we all get a chance to get to know one another - and really make training at our school a family experience. We offer a Demo Team where weapons training and acrobatic displays are the norm as well as a Leadership Team where students are taught skills such as public speaking, video production, classroom techniques and article writing that will make them leaders - whether in martial arts or any other profession or career.
