Root Canals, Root Canal Therapy
Over the years, root canals have earned a reputation as being a difficult and uncomfortable procedure. But patients at Cook Family and Cosmetic Dentistry have been pleasantly surprised to find out how easy and stress-free root canal treatment can be.
Dr. Cook has taken many hours of continuing education on endodontic (root canal) treatment and is very experienced in performing this tooth-saving service. Though scary-sounding, the vast majority of root canal procedures are painless and are even a little "boring" for patients. In fact, Dr. Cook has observed that many patients actually take a nap while he is performing the root canal procedure!
Root Canals Save Teeth
We’ve gotten used to saying “root canal” when we refer to the procedure, but there is actually a place deep within your tooth that is called the root canal. This space contains pulp, nerves, and blood vessels. When this part of your tooth is damaged by trauma, decay, or infection, we need to perform root canal treatment.
Without treatment, you will experience continued pain and, eventually, loss of the tooth. Our goal is to do everything possible to keep your teeth healthy and intact because losing just one tooth can lead to a cascade of other oral health problems.
What to Expect During a Root Canal
We believe that a lot of the anxiety people feel about root canals comes from a lack of understanding about the procedure. It is actually pretty straightforward, and a skilled, experienced professional like Dr. Cook can perform your root canal efficiently and comfortably.
The purpose of root canal treatment is to gently remove the infected material from inside your tooth. Once this is done, Dr. Cook will fill, cleanse, and seal the tooth. It may also be necessary for him to use an antibiotic to control the infection.
In most cases, a dental crown will be needed to protect and restore the tooth. If the tooth has significant damage, it may be necessary to build up the existing structure before a crown can be placed.
Comfortable, Caring Treatment
We know that we can tell you how simple a root canal is, but that may not be enough to completely alleviate your anxiety. Your comfort is our top priority, and we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), a mild form of sedation that makes you feel kind of dreamy and detached from what’s happening around you.
Our team is highly trained and has many years of experience in helping our patients experience stress-free root canal treatment. We are all sensitive to your concerns, and we are here to do everything possible to help keep you comfortable during your procedure.
