Sedation Dentistry, Nitrous Oxide
At AZ Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, your comfort is our highest priority. We want you to enjoy coming to our office for your care and visit us regularly so that we can help you have a healthy and attractive smile. One of the ways we accomplish this is with the use of nitrous oxide during procedures that may be uncomfortable or anxiety provoking.
It’s estimated that one in seven American adults are not getting the regular dental care they need because of dental fears and anxiety. We think that this is a sad statistic, and we want to be a part of the solution. If you are concerned about your dental treatment or have been avoiding regular cleanings and check-ups, please call our office to find out more about how we can help.
What Is Nitrous Oxide?
You may more be familiar with nitrous oxide’s other name – laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is a gas that is blended with oxygen and then administered through a mask. The anxiety-reducing effects of nitrous oxide will set in quickly and will stop just as fast as soon as the mask is removed. The gas wears off so quickly that you can safely drive yourself to and from your appointment.
Nitrous oxide also reduces sensations – including those of pain and discomfort. You may feel some tingling or heaviness in your limbs. It can also create a mild euphoric or “giggly” sensation, hence the “laughing gas” name. The gas is very safe for all ages and has no long-term or lasting effects. Most people tolerate nitrous oxide very well.
The Benefits of Nitrous Oxide
Even while you are receiving nitrous oxide, you remain fully awake and alert, able to answer questions and let us know about any concerns. It’s easy for us to adjust your dosage of nitrous oxide, so just let us know if you need a little bit more.
As mentioned, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off very quickly, which means that, unlike other sedation options, you can easily get on with the rest of your day following your dental appointment with no worries about cloudy thinking or lingering fuzziness.
