Periodontal disease can be diagnosed by your dentist or dental hygienist during a periodontal examination. This type of exam should always be part of your regular dental check-up.
Periodontal disease progress as the pocket or space between your tooth and gums get filled with tartar, bacteria and plaque. This causes irritation to the surrounding tissues. If these irritants remain in the pocket space, they cause damage to the gums and eventually the bone that supporting your teeth!
If the disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis, and no damage has been done. One to two regular cleanings will be recommended. Also, you will receive instructions on improving your oral hygiene habits and with regular dental cleanings.
