Snoring is not only disruptive to your sleep, it can also be a sign of sleep apnea, a serious health condition. Snoring can have a severe effect on you and your partner’s quality of life, and excessive snoring can even put a strain on your relationship. Dr. Robertson has experience treating snoring using a variety of oral appliances. These appliances are customized to fit your mouth perfectly and relieve your snoring in a number of ways. If you snore, call our Irvine dental office today to schedule your consultation with Dr. Robertson and find out if a customized dental appliance can help you. What Causes Snoring? A number of factors can contribute to a chronic snoring problem. For some people, the anatomy of their mouth plays a role. For example, if your palate is too thick or too low, it can narrow your airway, leading to vibration while you breathe. This condition is also a situation that can lead to sleep apnea. If you are in the habit of drinking alcohol before you go to sleep, you may experience snoring since alcohol causes relaxation of your throat muscles, which increases vibration. A deviated septum or chronic congestion stemming from allergies or other nasal issues may also be to blame. These conditions may make it difficult for you to breathe through your nose and cause you to breathe through your mouth instead. At your appointment with Dr. Robertson, he will examine you thoroughly to determine the cause of your snoring so that he knows how to best treat it. If sleep apnea is suspected, we will provide you with a referral to an accredited sleep center for a sleep study so that we can better understand your condition and treat it appropriately. Treating Snoring Snoring can be effectively and comfortably treated through the use of oral appliances that are worn while you sleep. These devices work by repositioning your tongue and your lower jaw, increasing the size of your airway, and therefore reducing vibration. We use a number of different appliances at our office because every person’s situation is unique, and an appliance that may be right for one person may not be as effective as another. Each of the oral appliances we use can be adjusted and calibrated so that it fits comfortably and meets your needs. Additionally, the appliances are durable and long lasting when treated with proper care. When you are fitted for your device, we will also show you how to make any necessary adjustments and provide you with advice on cleaning and caring for your appliance to help extend its life and keep its comfortable wear. If snoring is causing a problem in your life, call our office right away to schedule your free consultation with Irvine dentist Dr. Jeffrey Robertson and find out the difference that oral appliances can make.
