Missing teeth are a problem, and not just because they detract from your appearance. You may also notice difficulty speaking clearly and discomfort when you eat. Replacing missing teeth is important for both your comfort and your oral health, and dental implants can be the perfect solution. Dental implants can be used for treating serious cases such as missing, infected, damaged, or impacted teeth. How Dental Implants Work Dental implants consist of a very small titanium screw that is surgically placed in your jawbone. This piece acts as a replacement root and prevents the surrounding tissue from disintegrating. An abutment piece is attached to the implant and a restoration like a crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the abutment. The restoration is carefully designed to perfectly match the appearance of the surrounding natural teeth. Dental implants can also be used to hold partial or full dentures securely in place. Instead of attaching a crown to the abutment, the partial denture is fitted with a ring that locks on to the dental implant structure. Only one implant may be needed to securely maintain the prosthetic tooth in place. For full dentures, multiple implants may be required. Implant-supported dentures provide the same functions as natural teeth while enhancing your smile.
