Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding young children put a tremendous amount of strain on a woman’s body and affect the appearance of the abdomen and breasts. While pregnant, and especially in the last trimester, the presence of the baby in the uterus causes stretching of the abdominal muscles, skin, and soft tissue. For many women these tissues return to normal after delivery, but sometimes the skin and muscle remain permanently loose. This appears as either an excess of tissue of the lower abdomen, or in more severe cases, as an “apron” of skin that hangs over the pubic area. The “six pack” muscles also will sometimes not repair themselves, which will result in a loose abdominal wall, even if the overlying skin itself is not loose. Women with this condition complain that at certain times of the day, especially after meals, they look like they are still pregnant because the “six pack” muscle cannot retain their expanded stomach.
