As a Licensed Educational Psychologist and director of El Paseo Testing Center, Brent Cooper works with children, teens and adults every day and specializes in conducting psychological-educational evaluations. Through these assessments Brent is able to work with clients to establish individual learning plans and educational goals. In addition to educational evaluations, Brent also works with clients impacted by autism, ADHD and learning disabilities. He is an advocate for early intervention, calling it the key to success for an individual living with a learning or behavioral difference. Brent earned his Master of Arts degree in educational psychology and Master of Arts degree in counseling psychology from Loyola Marymount University. He has been practicing in Southern California for the last 12 years and often works with local professionals and physicians, as well as teachers and educational administrators at both the school-site and district levels. Additionally, he has served on the board of the Inland Regional Branch for the International Dyslexia Association. Parents and students from local and surrounding southern California school districts often seek Brent out to provide Individual Educational Evaluations (IEE). He is one of the few licensed providers in the Coachella Valley able to facilitate an IEE. This distinction, coupled with his training and expertise, allows him to conduct objective, comprehensive psychological-educational evaluations. There are a number of benefits to undergoing a psychological-educational evaluation. Each evaluation gives students, parents, teachers, administrators, tutors and educational counselors specific insight into the strengths and weaknesses of learners, as well as establishes ways to alleviate problem areas, thus ensuring successful educational experiences and developing independent learners. Brent works with students and their parents in a comfortable, non-threatening environment to promote a positive evaluation experience. He caters each assessment to the individual; by reviewing records, making observations and interviewing students and their parent(s) and teachers, he is able to determine areas of academic, emotional and/or behavioral challenges. If tutoring is deemed the best route for a client, Brent utilizes both in-home and virtual education therapy services and can guide parents to determine the best option for their child. Through El Paseo Children’s Center, credentialed teachers and educational therapists can provide one-on-one services in a client’s home, or virtually by utilizing Skype and Facetime technology. By offering virtual therapy, El Paseo Children’s Center remains on the cutting-edge of tutoring technology and allows busy or out-of-town students an opportunity to receive assistance in challenging areas. Brent often conducts evaluations for adults who have previously struggled in test-taking situations— SAT’s, BAR exam, the MCAT’s, etc.— and is very familiar with available accommodations— test setting, timing and scheduling, test direction, test presentation and test response— and the processes for seeking such accommodations. In addition to specializing in evaluations geared toward adults, he also works with educational counselors to complete and file all necessary paperwork with the state of California. Brent has facilitated parenting groups to teach parents about implementing behavior interventions and advising them on how to navigate the education-maze. He has conducted free parenting groups, social skills classes and has presented educational topics at various universities, high schools and elementary schools. With a desire to see individuals thrive in the educational setting, along with his experience and training, Brent is a valuable resource in the areas of educational, psychological, emotional and behavioral assessments. With every client he aims to utilize the strengths discovered in their evaluations to create a set of goals and objectives that will sustain a positive and successful educational experience.
