For many people with missing teeth, dentures have made an extraordinary difference in their quality of life. Missing teeth not only can cause you to feel self-conscious, they also make it difficult to enjoy favorite foods and may change the sound of your speech. If missing teeth are not replaced, the whole shape of your face may become altered over time. Denture technology has come a long way in recent years, and today’s dentures look much more natural and fit more comfortably than ever before. Instead of the “cookie cutter” teeth that used to make dentures look so artificial, today’s dentures use teeth that are made and placed individually to give you a much more natural look. Most people may never even know that you wear dentures. With proper care, dentures and partials are long-lasting and will continue to look great. Call today for an appointment to discuss dentures with Dr. Chung. Fitting Your Dentures Your set of dentures will be custom-made to fit your mouth perfectly. When dentures fit properly, the risk of slipping and gum irritation is greatly reduced. Before you are fitted for dentures, Dr. Chung will give you a thorough examination to check the condition of your jaw bone and gums. If necessary, any infections and irritations will be treated so that we can get the best possible model of your mouth. The next step will be to take impressions and measurements of your mouth for the dental lab to use when creating your dentures. We will create different models so that we can decide which one fits and looks the best. When your dentures return from the dental lab, we will have you come back to the office so that we can check the fit and make sure that everything feels and looks great. Adjusting to Dentures There may be a brief adjustment period while you get used to speaking and eating with your new dentures. Dr. Chung will provide tips and advice to help you get through this period quickly and easily, and soon you will be eating and speaking comfortably and naturally. Caring for Your Dentures Be careful to never drop your dentures as this can cause serious damage to them. When you take your dentures out to clean them, it can be helpful to fill the sink with water and lay out a soft towel on the counter so that your dentures will be protected if you do happen to drop them. You should clean your dentures at least once daily to prevent bacteria from developing on them, which can cause irritation in your mouth and bad breath. Use a cleanser that is specifically made for dentures; Dr. Chung can help you choose one. Don’t use a regular toothbrush or toothpaste, as these can scratch your dentures. Dentures may warp if exposed to heat, so don’t use hot water to clean them or soak them. They may also warp if allowed to dry out, so any time they are not in your mouth, they should be kept moist in either clean water or a denture soaking product. For more information about dentures and tips on caring for your dentures properly, please call our office and schedule an appointment with Dr. Chung.
