Bone grafting is a procedure in which your dentist will place a bit of bone grafting material onto the site where the bone is lacking structure. Because bone is living tissue, this allows your body to grow new bone at that location, providing your dentist with the proper bone structure to place the dental implant. In some cases, a soft tissue graft to help replace lost gum tissue may also need to be performed in a similar procedure.
If you are having a tooth extracted, your dentist may opt to place a bone graft during the procedure as a preventive measure, or as a way to prepare the site for a future dental implant. This procedure will be performed with the aid of either conscious sedation techniques or local anesthesia. In some cases, a bone graft and a dental implant may be placed at the same time, though this is more rare.
