One of the greatest innovations in dentistry has been the advent of dental implants. It is a proven solution to replacing missing teeth without affecting neighboring teeth (a bridge) or having to remove something every night (removable partial dentures). Multiple research studies indicate an outstanding success rate of over 95% and can last a lifetime.
A dental implant is a titanium post that is inserted into the bone, replacing the root form of the missing tooth. Generally, the area is left alone for as little as 3 months so the bone can integrate around the implant. Once the implant is confirmed to be integrated into the bone a crown is placed over the top of the tooth, blending into the natural smile and never giving an indication that a tooth was missing in the first place!
There are a variety of applications for dental implants. If multiple teeth are missing, sometimes two implants can be placed and a bridge used to replace the missing teeth. For those who have problems with dentures staying in place, implants can be used to anchor the denture to the gums by way of a ball and socket type connection, or permanently affixed to the implants so that the denture does not move at all. Implants can also be used to help move teeth in orthodontics. It all depends on the clinical situation and what is best for each individual.
