A surgical procedure developed in the 1930s by Dr. Frederick Mohs has been very effective at preserving the most amount of healthy tissue while ensuring the tumor and its roots are removed.
Skin cancer surgery using the Mohs technique is done in stages, beginning with the tumor and a minimal amount of surrounding tissue. A microscopic evaluation is performed on each excised section until no further cancer is detected in the perimeter. The incision is carefully closed to create the smallest possible scar, and in many cases the site of the surgery is nearly invisible within a year or two. The cure rate of more than 98 percent for Squamous Cell and Basal Cell carcinomas is higher than any other surgical treatment for these types of skin cancer.
