Gastric Bypass Surgery is a procedure that involves stapling the stomach to create a small stomach pouch. The pouch is then connected to the lower part of the small intestine. This means that food bypasses much of the stomach and intestine as it moves through the digestive system. Gastric bypass surgery helps patients lose large amounts of weight by two different methods. First, because it restricts how much they can eat, and second, because it controls how much of that food is actually absorbed by the intestines. The usual hospital stay for the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is two - three days and return to work is typically one - two weeks later.
