First Aid for Dental Emergencies Taking a few simple steps in the immediate aftermath of a dental emergency can help you enjoy a better outcome. Common dental emergencies include: Toothache. Anything from a trapped piece of food to a deep cavity could cause a toothache. Your first step should be to take a dose of over-the-counter pain medication, like Tylenol, to help ease your discomfort. A cool compress may also alleviate some pain. Gently floss your teeth to remove any particles of food. Rinse with a warm salt water solution. Chipped, broken, or cracked tooth. Take a dose of OTC pain medication to relieve any discomfort. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to remove any pieces of broken tooth from the mouth. Your damaged tooth will not heal itself so you should seek treatment immediately. Treatment options will vary from case to case but could include bonding, dental crowns, and porcelain veneers. Knocked a tooth loose or knocked a tooth out. If the tooth was knocked loose, press it gently to realign in the socket. You may need to have x-rays taken to determine whether anything was permanently damaged. If the tooth was knocked out entirely, recover it and rinse with warm water. Do not remove any bits of tissue clinging to the root. Gently press the tooth into the socket. If this is not possible, store the tooth in a jar of milk, salt water, Sav-a-Tooth solution, or tap water and bring it to your appointment.
