Boulder, Colorado cosmetic dentist Dr. Alan Wasserman offers patient’s the option of improving their smile with porcelain veneers. Veneers are a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure, used to correct a number of concerns like spaces between teeth, discolored, chipped or broken teeth and misaligned teeth.
What Are Dental Veneers
Dental Veneers are a type of cosmetic dental restoration used to cover the front and sides of teeth in the smile zone. They can either be indirect (porcelain veneers) or direct (tooth bonding).
About Porcelain Veneers
Advances in material allow today’s porcelain veneers to mimic natural teeth better than ever before. They are usually made of a combination of materials including zirconium, pressed glass and finely layered ceramic to mirror the strength and subtle beauty of natural teeth.
John came to Boulder cosmetic dentist Dr. Wasserman wanting to improve the appearance of his smile. Dr. Wasserman applied three porcelain veneers to the front of John’s teeth for a natural looking smile makeover. See more cosmetic dentistry before and after photos in our smile gallery.
The Porcelain Veneer Process
The indirect technique is what most people think of when talking about veneers. This procedure usually involves multiple appointments to design the treatment plan, prepare the teeth and apply temporaries to be worn while the porcelain veneers are being fabricated at a dental laboratory.
The teeth are prepared for porcelain veneers in the most conservative method possible, careful to retain the most amount of natural tooth structure. An impression is taken after the teeth are prepared and they are covered with provisional or temporary veneers that are made of plastic.
In about two to three weeks the porcelain veneers are back from the laboratory. Dr. Wasserman will remove the temporaries and check the porcelain veneers for fit, aesthetics and comfort. Once both he and the patient are satisfied, the porcelain veneers are permanently bonded to the teeth.
An alternative to porcelain veneers is a direct restoration known as tooth bonding or composite bonding. This is an affordable and conservative cosmetic dentistry treatment, best suited for patients who have minor concerns or are not prepared for the full cost of porcelain veneers.
This method involves applying tooth colored composite resin directly on the outside of the tooth. Because bonding requires that the resin be sculpted by hand, bonding should be performed by a skilled cosmetic dentist like Dr. Wasserman for the best results.
