Electronic Product Development firm, Advantage has been invited to present their Spectroscopic Dosimeter instrument's impact and importance to crew health and well-being study on the International Space Station capabilities to NASA Human Exploration and Operations in Washington DC. Work is well underway to perfect the instrument to take on data that is important to run crucial medical testing and medical experiments on the International Space Station. Testing equipment must meet all of the aerospace requirements ... including shock & vibration, heat dissipation, radiation hardened components as well as redundancy built into the firmware in order to meet reliability requirements and protect against radiation induced latch up in the electronics. Advantage and its science partner collaborated to developed the Spectroscopic Dosimeter laser instrument for a NASA AMES project. The purpose is of this science instrument is to measure and quantify the number and type of energy particles astronauts are exposed to in space environments. The instrument has been successfully tested at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANL), Weapons Neutron Research Facility (WNR). Advantage attracted the interest of Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) and Colorado University’s Space Medical Science Experiments Implementer BioServe to support the medical experiments currently slated for the ISS. Medical testing conditions in space are expected to provide advances in understanding that cannot be achieved on Earth. By obtaining a cooperative agreement with the firm's science partner, Casis, CU and NASA Advantage is expanding the study and exploration of medical solutions in the zero gravity environment of space (Exomedicine). Space Life Sciences Research in the extreme conditions existing in the ISS environment, including exposure to extreme heat and cold cycling, ultra-vacuum, atomic oxygen, and high energy radiation can be used to promote benefits to human health on Earth. Testing and qualification of materials exposed simultaneously to these extreme conditions have provided data to enable the development of long-life reliable components used on Earth as well as in the world’s most sophisticated satellite and spacecraft components. Jody Singleton, Advantage president and CEO, has stated that, "The exciting part of medical testing to be conducted in microgravity is the advancement, study and practice in the field of medicine on Earth through these medical research investigations. By combining our expertise in deep space and in designing medical devices, we will be able to conduct experiments specific to medical testing in an environment of weightlessness, that modifies many discernible phenomena within the physical and life sciences on a wide range of organisms from bacteria to humans including alterations within cells."
