For some people, separation agreements are an attractive alternative to a divorce. A couple may choose to remain legally married while living separately and having their parenting time and financial affairs clearly defined and approved by a court. The process for obtaining a legal separation is similar to obtaining a divorce. If a legal separation is obtained, the parties are not able to remarry while they’re separated. However, if the parties prefer to have a legal separation for whatever reason, they can have the separation converted to a divorce at a later time.
