I hate to break it to you, but you might have bad breath! Don’t feel offended, though. Bad breath is common and you can treat it before this happens again.
If you’re a smoker or a tobacco chewer your chances of bad breath are greatly increased. Not only that, but your teeth will be stained and your gums will be irritated.
What causes bad breath?
Tobacco products, poor dental hygiene, dry mouth, mouth infections, dental problems, or medications can greatly contribute. Dry mouth can be fixed with saliva or water, which will wash away dead cells in your mouth.
What it comes down to is odor-causing bacteria. This is primarily seen in dentures that aren’t properly cleaned. If you’re not quite sure if your breath is on the stinky side, look for the obvious symptoms: do you have an unpleasant odor or taste in your mouth? Is your tongue looking white? If you said yes to any of these you might have bad breath.
So how do I fix it?!
First thing’s first: Brush twice a day with a good fluoride toothpaste to remove food and plaque. Brushing after you eat is best, and don’t forget to include your tongue! Replacing your toothbrush every 2-3 months and after you’ve been sick will help, as well as flossing every single day. Additionally, add picking up an antibacterial mouth wash and using it twice a day to your list! Keep your mouth moist and hydrated and keep some sugarless gum (tip: look for those containing xylitol) handy. Not only does that keep your mouth salivated, but it’ll give you that minty odor you’re longing for. Visiting your dentist at least twice a year is your best bet. A professional exam and cleaning is where it’s at!
