Root Canal Therapy, Root Canal Treatment
When we receive a phone call from a patient experiencing a dental emergency, we invite them into our office promptly so that we can provide relief as quickly as possible. In many cases, we can treat dental emergencies on the same day.
What Is a Root Canal?
A root canal is a part of your internal tooth structure that houses your nerve and other tissue. Root canal treatment, or root canal therapy, is the removal of the tissue within your tooth’s root canal to relieve the symptoms of infection and inflammation.
We gently remove any infected tissue using precision instruments and place medication in the canal to prevent re-infection. Then we seal your tooth and allow it time to heal before placing a permanent restoration.
Infections can occur from neglect, trauma, and other unexplained reasons. Having an active infection in your mouth can cause discomfort as well as complications for your overall health. Letting an infection go untreated for too long may result in tooth loss.
Symptoms of Infection
When you need root canal therapy, the first sign is often swelling and pressure. Other symptoms include:
Pimple-like lesions on your gums
When you arrive in our office, we will use digital x-rays and other forms of diagnosis to determine if you are suffering from an infection. Our goal is to save your tooth and restore comfort. Saving your natural teeth is important because tooth loss can cause bone loss. Tooth loss can also cause your bite to shift, putting your other teeth at risk.
Restorative Treatment after Root Canal Treatment
After your root canal therapy is complete, we will recommend a permanent restoration to protect your tooth. In most cases, you will require a dental crown because after root canal treatment, your tooth can become brittle and more susceptible to breakage.
A dental crown will absorb some of the force from chewing and give your tooth extended longevity.
Gentle, Comfortable Treatment
Many people associate root canals with discomfort. It is actually the symptoms of the infection that cause the symptoms you experience. Once we eliminate the infection from your tooth, you will likely begin feeling better right away. Dr. Millan is extremely gentle and will make sure you are numb before we begin your procedure.
We will discuss post-treatment oral health management so that you can heal quickly and comfortably. While some sensitivity after treatment is normal, you should feel improvement with each passing day.
