Erectile dysfunction or ED refers to a man’s inability to get or maintain an erection for an extended period of time. This is a common condition and most men will experience it at some point during their lives. While the occurrence of ED increases as men grow older, it is not uncommon for those in their 20’s to get it too. According to studies, it affects 50 percent of men who are in their 50s, with the percentages increasing in the upper age ranges.
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by a number of factors, and indeed, in older men it's likely that several of these have contributed to the condition. In normal, healthy men, voluntary erections start in the brain. The brain sends messages down the spinal column, ending in the penal arteries. The signals open up the penis so that more blood can enter it. The only exception to this is erections that happen during the nighttime, wherein the signals emanate from the spinal cord and not the brain itself.
For a man to function sexually, he would require a healthy brain and spinal cord, enough blood supply to his penis, and a normal penis in terms of anatomy. Erectile dysfunction happens when one or more of the prerequisites are missing or is not functioning properly. Common factors that increase a person’s likelihood for getting ED are: chronic hypertension, diabetes, cigarette smoking, heart disease, problems in the spinal cord, previous surgical procedures for prostate cancer and anxiety. Also, certain treatments and medications can affect a man’s ability to get an erection.
