Orthodontists are specialists who have had advanced training in growth and development and can be helpful in assisting a child or adult patient in obtaining proper testing and screening in order to determine if breathing problems may be affecting their overall health and wellbeing. If a patient snores at night or has difficulty breathing through their nose or other symptoms, a sleep test may be indicated. If a patient is diagnosed with sleep apnea, a removable snoring device may be prescribed by Dr. Lach to reduce snoring and improve the quality of their sleep needed for optimal development and function. Removable snoring devices are much more easily tolerated by patients than CPAP machines, but must be closely monitored particularly in a growing child by an orthodontic specialist who understands dentofacial and jaw development. Permanent structural changes, such as dentofacial orthopedics or Mandibular advancement treatments , may be needed for a child or adult in order to become completely independent of removable oral appliances or CPAP machines which are provided by Dr. Lach in collaboration with other associated specialists.
