Georgia’s first renewable energy program, Green Power EMC, provides electricity through its 38 member EMCs (Electric Membership Corporations). A nonprofit corporation, Green Power EMC uses green resources such as low-impact hydroelectric plants, biomass, landfill gas, and solar to generate electricity. Since 2001, Green Power EMC has brought online three landfill generating sites, a low-impact hydroelectric facility, a biomass plant that turns wood waste into electricity, and four solar facilities. Green Power’s total renewable generating capacity is approximately 52 megawatts, with further renewable energy planned for the future. Green Power EMC and its Member EMCs plan to have more than 253 MW of renewable energy in operation by year end 2016 including more than 200 MW of solar generating capacity.
