The U factor of a replacement window tells you how well it insulates. Look for a TOTAL UNIT U factor as tested by the NFRC as opposed to a COG or Center of Glass rating which is nearly useless for any purpose but to mislead consumers. SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) and AI (air infiltration) are two additional ratings that are very important for obvious reason. Here in Milwaukee, Waukesha, and surrounding areas, we want the best U factor possible, the lowest air infiltration rating possible (under .05 cfm is preferred), and a moderate solar heat gain of .25 or higher in double pane configuration, as we want to take advantage of free heat in the winter time to improve overall efficiency. Many replacement window companies sell multiple coats of Low e to improve the u factor, however this makes for a darker replacement window that can actually be less efficient due to blocking too much heat. These windows are more appropriate in warmer climates.
