We know that many patients experience anxiety when it comes to the dentist. It is actually more common than you might think. Millions of Americans report feeling some level of anxiety related to their dental care. Our dentists and team have made a commitment to providing your necessary dentistry in a relaxed environment. For some patients that may mean they need help from sedation. Our Lafayette dental office offers two forms of conscious sedation dentistry - nitrous oxide and oral sedation. With both forms of sedation, you will remain fully conscious and responsive. Nitrous Oxide Sedation Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is the most common form of sedation used in dentistry. We mix it with oxygen and deliver it to our patients through a mask and under direct control and supervision of the dentist. Laughing gas creates a relaxed and euphoric state that helps take your mind off of your dental procedure. Nitrous oxide is so safe and effective that we can even use it on children who feel anxiety or have a hard time sitting still for their dental appointments. Once your procedure is over, the effects of nitrous oxide subside quickly and you can drive home and resume your regular activities. Oral Conscious Sedation With oral conscious sedation, you are given a pill to take one hour prior to your appointment. The medication will make you feel relaxed, so that you can comfortably receive the dental care that you need. Unlike with nitrous oxide, it will be necessary for you to arrange reliable to and from your appointment by a relative or close friend because you will likely feel groggy for the rest of the day. In order to prevent drug interactions and determine if you are healthy enough for oral sedation dentistry, we will need a separate appointment to collect your medical data and go over the information.
