Motorcyclists are more vulnerable on the road than people in passenger vehicles. Consequently, they are more likely to suffer severe injuries and even death when involved in a motorcycle accident.
Often when a car strikes a motorcyclist, the car may sustain little or no damage while the motorcyclist is seriously injured. Motorcycles offer very little protection, making their riders more likely to sustain debilitating wounds such as broken bones, internal damage, spinal cord or back injury, and brain injury. In very serious cases, a motorcycle accident can even result in death. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 4,553 motorcyclists were killed and another 87,000 injured in collisions in 2005. This constitutes a 13 percent increase in fatalities and a 14 percent increase in injuries over 2004. NHTSA estimates that in 2004, motorcyclists were 34 times more likely to be killed than passenger car occupants per vehicle mile.
With these statistics in mind, it is imperative that motorcyclists take all necessary precautions to avoid becoming victims of motorcycle accident injuries. Motorcyclists must wear helmets (mandated by Kansas and Missouri state law), remain aware of their surroundings, and exercise reasonable care when riding.
