Preventive Care, Preventive Dental Care
Everyone knows the saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” There are few places where that is truer than in your dental care. Regular checkups with Acadiana dentists Dr. Jerome Smith and Dr. Danny Domingue combined with professional cleanings with our talented oral hygienists will help to prevent most common dental problems such as cavities, decay, and gum disease.
We agree with the recommendation of the American Dental Association that most patients should have a cleaning every six months. In some cases, it may be appropriate to receive cleanings more frequently, and if we believe this to be true for you, we will discuss this with you as well as the reasons why.
Preventive Dental Examinations
Your examinations will typically include x-rays or other types of digital imaging, a screening for signs of oral cancer, and a comprehensive review of your current dental health. The goal of these examinations is to catch problems early on so that we can treat them using simple and conservative measures or, if treatment is not currently appropriate, create a plan to monitor the potential problem.
These examinations also give you a chance to bring up any concerns you might have about your dental health and ask us any questions. Of course, anytime you have a question, you are always free to give us a call or contact us online.
Professional Dental Cleanings
We are often asked why professional cleanings are necessary when our patients are so good about brushing and flossing their teeth on a regular basis. The fact is, no matter how often you brush, it’s practically impossible to remove all the plaque and bacteria from your teeth, especially plaque that settles between your teeth or beneath your gumline.
Over time, these small leftover bits of plaque will harden into tartar. Once this happens, the deposits can no longer be removed with a toothbrush and dental floss. If tartar is allowed to remain on your teeth, the result can be cavities and periodontal disease.
Our hygienists use specialized tools to remove tartar deposits from your teeth and from beneath your gumline. We also use an instrument to polish your teeth and brighten them. You can think of a professional cleaning as a fresh start every six months.
If you’ve been diligent about your home-care routine, you’ll see the payoff in quicker and simpler professional cleanings. If your home-care routine needs a little fine tuning, your cleanings are the perfect opportunity for us to review your habits and your techniques with you and find ways for you to get the most benefit possible out of your oral hygiene routines.
Some of our patients benefit from more direct preventive interventions. For example, fluoride is a preventive measure that we may discuss with you. The Lafayette Utilities System does not add fluoride to the public drinking water supply. Fluoride supplementation has been shown to increase resistance to cavities. If you are prone to cavities, we may recommend fluoride rinses and other treatments to help protect your teeth.
