Botox® injections result in the temporary relaxation of muscles that cause frown lines and wrinkles in the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. As a facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Bryan Ambro has specialized knowledge of facial anatomy and understands how the muscles function around the eyes. This experience enables him to deliver highly precise treatment for Botox and other cosmetic injectables. Botox® Injection – What to Expect Botox injections are performed in our outpatient treatment center at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible during treatment. In some cases, Dr. Ambro may use an anesthetic cream to numb the treatment area. The active ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin. Small amounts are injected into specific areas along the forehead and brows to selectively weaken the muscles and smooth away wrinkles. Botox does not cause numbness, just relaxation. Gradually, the muscles will regain function. Results of Botox injection typically last up to three or four months. After treatment, you may experience temporary bruising, swelling or soreness in the injection sites. These side effects don’t normally last more than a one to two days. Botox® Alternatives At Annapolis Facial Plastic Surgery, we offer several types of botulinum injectables. In addition to Botox, we carry Dyport® and Xeomin®. These products are very similar with a few key differences. Dr. Ambro can help you decide which is best for you. Botox vs. Dysport These two products are similar in many ways. First, they share the same active ingredient. They also work the same way. Both Botox and Dysport provide a temporary improvement in wrinkles and creases in the forehead area. The differences are subtle and choosing the right one is a decision you should make with your cosmetic doctor. Botox was the first botulinum injectable to receive FDA approval (2006) and is still the most popular treatment today. Dysport received FDA approval in 2009. There is some evidence that Dysport may last slightly longer than Botox and be more effective in treating crow’s feet. A single vial of Dysport usually costs less than a single vial of Botox, however, more vials of Dysport are typically needed to achieve the same results as Botox. What is Xeomin? Xeomin is the newest edition to the suite of botulinum injectables. It received FDA approval in 2011. What makes Xeomin slightly different from Botox and Dysport is a more pure form of botulinum, lacking the complex proteins of its competitors. This means that Xeomin is less likely to be rejected by the body, making it an excellent option for patients who have developed reactions to the other brands.
