While there are a number of things that make Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic Specialists of Michigan an exceptional dental practice, they can be particularly proud of their involvement in the education of thousands of children in the Macomb County area. Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics’ in-house Dental Health Educator, Sherri Okerhjelm, takes the lead role in providing proper dental health knowledge to children on a regular basis - in fact, she has met with over 6,000 children in the last year alone. Sherri partakes in this work all year round, but is at her busiest from February through April. During the regular school year she visits classrooms, but she continues her efforts in the summertime by visiting daycares and community events with large numbers of children present. Needless to say, the sizes of her groups vary greatly in size. Classrooms typically hold around 20 children in earlier grades, but classes tend to meld together into groups near 75 audience members for presentations to older students. In addition to providing her services at standard school programs and community events like athletic events, Trick-or-Treat trails, and the “Tummy to Toddlers” health fairs, Sherri also extends her expertise into the special needs community. When asked to describe her favorite part about her position as Dental Health Educator, Sherri expressed that she has trouble picking just one! She explained that she is “continually fulfilled by the fact that she has the opportunity to teach positive habits that will affect her students for the rest of their lives.” Outside of that, Sherri enjoys an extremely happy day-to-day working experience. “When I walk into a classroom,” she explained, “often times I am met with squeals of, ‘she’s here...she’s here!’ I certainly don’t get that welcome when I walk into many other rooms!” Sherri feels as though she is lucky to be able to leave an impression on the children she meets, and truly appreciates the bonds she has created. “Rarely do I leave a classroom without getting 5-10 hugs,” she added, “not many people get that in their workplace.” Sherri Okerhjelm adds an exceptionally unique layer of value to the Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic Specialists of Michigan practice. For more information about Sherri’s educational services, feel free to reach out to our main office. About Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, the offices of Drs.
