Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontic Specialists of Michigan is proud to be the first office in Michigan to offer the Acceledent adjunct to orthodontic treatment from our offices. Acceledent is an FDA approved medical device used in conjunction with Invisalign or traditional corrective orthodontic treatment methods in order to achieve faster, more comfortable results. Acceledent is, essentially, a gently vibrating mouthpiece that provides stimulation to the bony areas around the teeth. This vibration, which Acceledent refers to as “SoftPulse Technology ®,” has been scientifically proven to increase blood flow to the bones surrounding the teeth. The treatment method is quite similar to bone stimulation treatments used to help heal fractures in long bones. The mouthpiece is used for roughly twenty minutes every day, and is inserted just like an athletic mouthguard around existing Invisalign aligners or braces. It is recommended that the mouthpiece is worn for a consecutive twenty minutes - the treatment may not be as effective if the mouthpiece is worn sporadically for a total of twenty minutes throughout the day. While the mouthpiece is being used, it provides a stimulus to the surrounding bone, which “recruits” cells to the immediate area. These cells help to disassemble and reassemble the bone surrounding the teeth so that dental movement can occur at a faster rate. This is the same as the normal process of orthodontic tooth movement, it just occurs faster and more comfortably due to the stimulation. According to Dr. AJ Ker, scientific research has shown that Acceledent “provides a significant reduction in pain experience with orthodontic treatment, and does not lead to any noted side effects while in use.” Dr. Ker was also sure to mention that the new treatment method is, of course, FDA approved. He finished, “it can be a bit pricey, but I have never had a patient elect to use it an regret the purchase. It is especially great for families with multiple members in orthodontic treatment as the device can be shared as long as a separate mouth portion is purchased for each patient.” Check out the following images below to get a better idea as to how the Acceledent treatment method works. If you have any questions about the method, or feel as though Acceledent may be right for you, please feel free to give us a call.
