Inspired by patterns in nature, we founded our business to utilize Reclaimed Appalachian Wood Waste (RAW™) and create pure architectural products in support of Independent Business Owners working to build “whole” communities.
To accomplish this, we designed an innovative product line, new to the marketplace; created new technology and processes, built machines and tools to manufacture the products; created a supply chain; identified clients and bootstrapped a new business that would grow into an industry.
We hand-craft beautiful wall coverings for exterior and interior spaces using reclaimed bark from trees. We honor the environment through thoughtful product design, procurement and refinement using sustainably certified processes. We honor people by maintaining a long heritage of artisanal craftsmanship, supporting and enriching local culture and building whole-communities. We actively share our success through community leadership and education, vendor training, volunteerism, employee designated donations, paying a living-wage and in special circumstances – lending.
The products that we create form an authentic connection between nature, the built environment and individuals. This is an important balance for today and our future. Congruously, we are a high touch, high service, highly technical niche purveyor of natural architectural elements. Our rich heritage is celebrated through products that are both innovative and relevant today while creating a timeless legacy that will be cherished tomorrow.
We do not make these statements lightly as we use stringent third party certifications to verify our claims. The Bark House® at Highland Craftsmen Inc® is a family owned, B Corp Certified (2008) “Best for the World” Awarded (2013, 2014, 2015) company. Our primary products have Cradle to Cradle Gold and Silver Certifications. We are a C2C Legacy Company (2007) and the original bark wall covering manufacturer (1990). Quality takes on a new definition here.
We aren’t the only ones saying this either. Brent Simmons, LEED Approved Provider, Certified Green Professional: “We were drawn like gravity to the Bark House Style. It seemed as if Bark House products were what nature had intended for us to use all along but until recently, had been dormant to human kind. Years from now I believe Marty and Chris McCurry will be known as creators of one of the most innovative architectural movements we have ever been dealt. To grasp that idea, you first must understand the Bark House movement is so much more than bark products. It’s harmony with nature. It’s the greatest achievement of sustainability. It’s a part of the connection that the human soul yearns for from birth. In this presence, you can glimpse into nature’s soul, and feel as if you belong.”
