Some patients who suffer from gum disease can benefit from periodontal treatment in order to remove bacteria and damaged tissue and to the promote healing of bone. At Trinity Dental Care, we utilize the latest in laser technology to improve the periodontal health of our patients. Periodontal (Gum) Therapy The CDC estimates that over 50% of Americans suffer from periodontal (gum) disease. Gum disease can cause bone loss, bad breath, discomfort, bleeding, pain, and tooth loss. It also affects your overall health. Researchers have linked gum disease with other serious systemic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. If you suffer from periodontal disease, you may benefit from periodontal therapy. In order to promote healing, we use specialized dental cleanings that help to eliminate tartar and bacteria from beneath your gumline so that your gums can heal. We also use Arestin, a local anti-biotic agent, to treat problem areas and promote healing. We take special care to ensure your comfort during treatment and provide you with the information necessary to improve the quality of your home care. Laser Dentistry At Trinity Dental Care, we use soft tissue laser dentistry to assist with the removal of bacteria and diseased tissue in order to promote healing of your bone and gum tissue. This process is much more comfortable and effective than previous methods and can provide you with faster healing times. Each patient is different and we will customize a treatment plan that will help restore your oral health. When you improve your home care and stay on track with visits to our office, your health can improve dramatically and you can have a healthy, beautiful smile. Periodontal Laser Surgery Periodontal disease is a serious infection caused by bacteria growth around and beneath your gum line. Symptoms of periodontal disease include bleeding gums, pain, bad breath, gum recession, and bone loss. Untreated periodontal disease can cause tooth loss as well as complicate systemic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory illnesses. In its early stages, called gingivitis, we can treat periodontal disease with specialized dental cleanings developed to remove and control bacteria. As it progresses, surgery may become necessary. With traditional gum surgery, a dentist would use a scalpel to remove any diseased tissue that might inhibit healing. Traditional surgery requires stitches and a significant healing time. During surgery, bleeding can make the procedure more difficult. With laser periodontal surgery, however, you can achieve the best results possible without cutting or stitches. Because the laser uses light energy to eliminate bacteria and diseased tissue, we can remove only the tissue necessary for healing, and stitches will not be necessary. With laser gum treatments, you can have less bleeding, less pain, and a faster healing time. Other Gum Treatments Because of the versatility of our dental laser, our dentists, Dr. Labib, Dr. Ibrahim, and Dr. Pozzi, can provide a number of gum treatments for the convenience of our patients. Gingival contouring – if you are considering cosmetic dentistry and have what is referred to as a “gummy smile,” we can remove the excess gum tissue from your teeth to give you an improved appearance. Gingival contouring is also useful for uneven gums or overgrown tissue. Frenectomy – A frenulum is a small flap of tissue that connects the inside of your lip to your gums and your tongue to the floor of your mouth. This prevents your lips and tongue from moving too far. In some patients with large frenula, they can shift teeth, prohibit natural movement, and inhibit speech. By removing some of the excess tissue with laser dentistry, you can achieve comfortable, successful results. Restoration preparation – If you need a dental restoration, we may prep the area with a dental laser because it causes less bleeding and makes it easier to restore your tooth. As the patient, you can enjoy faster, more comfortable healing times after your procedure.
