A spinal cord injury is damage to any part of the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal. It often causes permanent changes in strength, sensation and other body functions below the site of the injury. Physical therapy is used to treat (temporary or permanent) spinal cord injuries that occur from trauma or disease, and result in damage to the spinal cord’s normal motor, sensory, or autonomic function. Some causes can be a motor vehicle accident, fall, transverse myelitis, Friedreich’s ataxia, and spina bifida. During rehabilitation, we emphasize maintenance and strengthening of existing muscle function, redeveloping fine motor skills and learning adaptive techniques to accomplish day-to-day tasks.
