Three people were killed while 10 more were injured early Wednesday when several vehicles collided on the Long Island Expressway (LIE) in Queens, causing NYPD to shut down lanes / traffic heading toward Manhattan for part of the morning rush.
Two vehicles collided around 4 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway, near the exit at Maurice Avenue, in the Maspeth neighborhood, and then four other vehicles, including a large truck, crashed into the first two vehicles, the authorities said.
Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said, and 10 other people were injured and taken to area hospitals. One of them was critically injured and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center. The rest were in stable condition; their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, the authorities said.
The crashes prompted the authorities to close off the eastbound lanes, which were reopened shortly before 7 a.m., the authorities said.
This is the second deadly accident this month, when six people died when a car traveling east on the Expressway crossed the median and hit two cars that were heading west near Exit 68 in Manorville, N.Y., Suffolk County police said.
