Sparkling at the Tony Awards. The 68th Annual Tony Awards Sunday took place on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and as expected, Broadway’s biggest night of the year sparkled! According to nationaljeweler.com, Broadway’s brightest stars favored drop earrings and rings with diamond pave. Jennifer Hudson and Krystal Joy Brown wore drop earrings and ear clusters, and ear cuffs have been gaining popularity, as shown by actresses Leighton Meester and Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn.
Fancy-colored diamond rings all the rage. Fancy-colored diamond rings have been surging in popularity for years, and they’re not slowing down this summer. Basketball star Kobe Bryant purchased an 8-carat fancy purple diamond for $4 million for his wife, and they’ve been seen on celebs including Heidi Klum, Kelly Clarkson, Adele, Carrie Underwood, Rebecca Romijn and Paris Hilton. And pink is still popular based on Victoria Beckham’s 10-carat pink diamond ring and Anna Kournikova’s 11-carat pink diamond engagement ring.
Watchmaker Tourneau helps at-risk students. On June 12, luxury watchmaker Torneau hosted a graduation ceremony at its Long Island City, NY headquarters for its latest group of high school students who finished its twice-yearly watchmaking program. Called the “Art of Watchmaking,” it provides a small group of at-risk students with the opportunity to learn about the time-honored craft from the Torneau experts. Created by Terry Irby, Tourneau’s technical director, in March 2013, the program is designed to increase youth interest in a watchmaking career.
The latest graduates are from Manhattan Comprehensive Day and Night High School, and were chosen by school counselors, then interviewed by Irby. If the students passed a series of short tests and expressed interest in watchmaking, they were accepted into the program. Then for two months, students learned watchmaking skills, including how to make simple repairs to watches and antique clocks.
Couture Design Awards winners announced. Instoremag.com wrote about the recent Couture Design Awards, which took place in Las Vegas on June 2. Some of the jewelry design categories included Colored Gems Above $20,000, Diamonds Above $20,000, Gold, Pearl, Platinum, and Silver. Five judges narrowed the field of contestants from hundreds to just 36 designs, a winner and first and second runner-up in each of the 12 categories. In addition, retailers picked their favorites, casting ballots throughout the show for the People’s Choice award.
