For most consumers, using the internet to buy flights or reserve hotels in order to find the best price is common practice. The advantages are numerous: not only for finding the best discounts but also for finding more detailed travel information, specific to your needs. But, do people apply these practices when making other purchases?
Consulting local deals before doing the weekly shopping is becoming more and more common, as most consumers are aware that the best way to save is to plan what you will purchase beforehand. Tiendeo, an online platform that groups together catalogues and offers from the retail industry, is well aware of this trend. During the month of May, Tiendeo has undertaken a survey of the most popular searches made by their users.
The conclusions of the survey are similar in all of the 17 countries where the Tiendeo app and website are present: the most popular category is supermarkets and the most expensive products in shopping baskets are also the most popular. The second most popular category is fashion.
Which supermarkets are searched for most?
Searches for supermarket brochures represent 57% of total searches in Germany. Germany is the country where supermarket brochures are most searched for, and is also the home of the most searched for supermarket chain in Europe, namely Lidl. The proportion of searches for supermarket brochures is lowest among Indian users – 13% of the total number of searches – as India is the country with the smallest presence of big chains and retailers.
Which products are the most sought after?
Items which by volume or price are the most expensive in the shopping basket are the most sought after by users. Beer can be found in the top position of the most searched for products, alongside chicken. Argentinians, Brazilians and the Dutch are the most interested in beer; the British, Colombians and Peruvians opt to purchase more meat products.
Along with these two items we can add coffee to the list – the star product among the Portuguese and Americans – and also water, number one in Italy. The Tiendeo report also shows that rice, chocolate and pork loin are the top searched products in the countries of India, France
and Germany respectively. Spanish users, however, depart from this trend, with diapers being the most searched for product online. Mexicans also put this product at number one in their searches.
Most searched supermarkets and brands
It is clear therefore that online catalogues play a key role in the growing need for consumers to search for offers online before making a purchase in-store. Why is this so? In the context of the current financial crisis, one of the priorities of the consumer is to save money and the more they can save, the better.
Tiendeo is a leading website and app that groups together catalogues, coupons and offers from the retail industry. Tiendeo's objective is to help consumers find the best local offers and already counts more than 9.5 million catalogues read each month. Tiendeo International, with a presence in 17 countries, counts 15 million catalogues read each month from the website, iPhone, iPad and Android devices.
