Coconut oil hair mask
Skin Treatment, Coconut Oil, Hair Spray
Have you looked at your hair lately? If you’ve been out in the summer sun, or worse, at the beach, you’ve been exposing your hair to three of the harshest environments possible: sun, wind, and salt spray. These three elements turn soft, silky hair into a rat’s nest of dry, damaged hair in the blink of an eye. Enjoying the outdoors is both fun and healthy, but your hair pays the price. To keep your hair beautiful while playing in the sun or sea, treat it with a conditioning mask three to five nights a week. Get the dollar signs out of your eyes, because you don’t have to buy expensive mask products; you can make a rejuvenating mask yourself, with just a few ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, starting with coconut oil.
Coconut oil is bouncing back from the ill-advised theories saying it caused your cholesterol to rise and would give you heart disease. In fact, the opposite is true – coconut oil causes your good cholesterol to rise, and it’s good for your heart. Coconut oil is composed of medium-chain fatty acids, also called medium-chain triglycerides, and these MCFAs are processed differently in your body than unsaturated fats. MCFAs do not spike your blood sugar, and they help your body process insulin, so coconut oil is a weapon against metabolic syndrome. Coconut oil has a host of other medicinal properties, but that’s another article. Coconut oil is perfect for your skin and hair. See how to prepare coconut oil hair mask.
Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat; like medium-chain fatty acids, monounsaturated fats are processed differently by the body than polyunsaturated fats. Olive oil has many health benefits just like coconut oil. And, like coconut oil, olive oil is great for your hair and skin. Olive oil and coconut oil are both high in Vitamin E; Vitamin E helps your hair look soft, shiny and healthy, and it helps repair split ends.
Lemon juice is a citric acid; it can be used as a dandruff treatment, to exfoliate your scalp while an oil is used to condition it. Use lemon juice in a hair mask if you have dry scalp or dandruff.
Using a Mask on Your Hair
Apply masks to dry, unwashed hair, for maximum absorption. Start with the roots, and work the mask out to the ends. Once your hair is thoroughly saturated, pin or clip it up and place a shower cap over your hair. Wrap a warm towel around your head, or blow on the shower cap with a hair dryer set on the warm setting, for 15 – 30 minutes. If you have the time and don’t mind sleeping with a towel around your head, you can leave the mask in overnight. At the end of the absorption time, remove the towel, if you used one, and remove the shower cap. Shampoo your hair to remove the excess mask, and condition. For best results, apply a mask three to five times a week.
Hair Mask Recipe
2 Tablespoons virgin coconut oil
2 Tablespoons olive oil
2 Tablespoons lemon juice (optional)
If the coconut oil is solid, melt the two tablespoons. Once the coconut oil is liquid, mix with the two tablespoons of olive oil, and if you want to exfoliate your scalp, the two tablespoons of lemon juice.
Apply this mask as described, at least three times a week.
It’s possible to condition your hair without blowing your budget, and the results will be well worth the effort.
