“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” How many times have you heard those words? Chances are, you’ve said them yourself! But have you ever pondered what they mean when it comes to your dental health? At Premier Dental, our dentists and the rest of our team are skilled at treating a range of dental health conditions, but the truth is that taking just a few extra steps could have prevented most of those conditions from developing in the first place. We want to help you by teaching you the best techniques for brushing and flossing, providing skilled examinations and cleanings, and offering a few extra services that can give you an edge when it comes to fighting cavities and gum disease. Brushing and Flossing Brushing and flossing every day are the best ways to avoid cavities and gum disease. Taking just a few minutes out of your schedule to practice this important habit will make a world of difference in your dental health. Additionally, if you have children, you know that your kids take their cues from you, so brushing and flossing your own teeth will encourage them to develop their own healthy habits. At Premier Dental, we are happy to discuss your brushing and flossing routine and look for ways to make improvements. We can recommend the proper type of toothbrush and dental floss and even provide hands-on guidance to improve your technique. Routine Examinations By taking the time to make regular dental check-ups a part of your schedule, you will likely save yourself a great deal of extra time in the dentist chair later. We agree with the recommendation of the American Dental Association of examinations and cleanings every six months for most of our patients (in some cases, additional appointments may be necessary, and we’ll discuss this issue with you if it is true in your case). Just like your doctor checks your cholesterol and performs other screening tests to make sure that you’re in good help, our dentists will check the condition of your teeth, gums, and the other tissue in your mouth to look for the signs of decay, periodontal disease, and even oral cancer. Regular screenings help us detect problems sooner when they are smaller and more easily treated, allowing us to use the most conservative measures possible. Professional Cleanings Even with the best brushing and flossing habits, you still need regular cleanings. Why? Because your teeth have natural grooves, creases, and other nooks and crannies that provide the perfect hiding place for plaque. Additionally, it can be difficult to remove all traces of plaque from beneath your gumline and between your teeth, particularly if your teeth are crowded. Our dental hygienists at Premier Dental are skilled at cleaning and polishing your teeth gently and thoroughly. This is also the ideal time to discuss any concerns you have about your home-care routine or your dental health in general. Sealants Many patients benefit from sealants, a preventive treatment that creates a barrier between the deep grooves found in some teeth and the bacteria that can lead to cavities. Applying sealants is quick and completely painless. The sealant material, a thin plastic, is applied to the grooves of the teeth and then cured using a special light. Once the sealant is cured, it is difficult to see – even up close – and will stay in place for several years.
