Once an individual has completed intensive inpatient treatment, the next phase in the recovery process is the establishment and implementation of an aftercare of outpatient treatment program. The purpose of the aftercare or outpatient program is to help the patient transition back into their normal lives and routines while providing the support necessary to perpetuate the life skills and knowledge needed to promote a healthy drug-free lifestyle. The importance of having a solid aftercare or outpatient program is paramount since the patient will be leaving the insular world of inpatient rehabilitation and will for the most part be functioning on their own.
