Vaginal prolapse usually occurs years after childbirth and is characterized by weakness of reproductive support structures. Structures such as the uterus, rectum, bladder, urethra, small bowel, or the vagina itself may begin to fall, or slip out of position resulting in tissues protruding outside the vagina. Lower abdominal and low back pressure may also be present. Treatments options include fitting a patient with a pessary (Milex) or surgical repair. Surgical repair is primarily done vaginally but for recurrences, or more advanced prolapse, the repair is done abdominally. The robotic approach to abdominal support systems has advantages over the traditional open abdominal procedures. These include small incisions, less pain and easier recovery. (Davinchi) Robotic prolapse surgery is a durable and successful method of pelvic organ prolapse that does not shorten or scar the vagina. During robotic prolapse surgery the patient is placed under general anaesthesia and five 1-2 centimeter-long incisions are made in the abdomen. A variety of surgical instruments are passed through the incisions to surgically correct the prolapse.
