The Aquatic Center at Advanced Rehabilitation’s West 12th Street office is a new service now offered. The 94 degree aquatic pool at Advanced Rehabilitation is a 15×15 “endless” pool providing a larger more comfortable treatment area. Outfitted with continuous currents providing increased resistance and an underwater treadmill allowing earlier weight bearing, the pool at advanced rehabilitation offers features that other clinics do not. We offer separate male and female changing rooms and showers for patient privacy. An ADA approved, handicap accessible lift allows for easy and safe access for those who need assistance. Aquatic therapy at Advanced Rehabilitation can be utilized as a supplement to traditional physical therapy management or may be prescribed specifically, depending on physician recommendation or at the physical therapist’s discretion. Aquatic therapy reduces the load on weight bearing joints and lessens the stress and strain on joints of the upper extremity and trunk. By reducing the load on joints movements and exercise are often performed with increased ease. Activities such as walking, squatting, and stepping are tolerated better and with less pain. The hydrostatic pressure of the water decreases joint and soft-tissue edema and swelling. Warm water increases joint flexibility, range of motion, promotes relaxation, and improves circulation. Following a land based physical therapy evaluation; an aquatic exercise program is individualized to each patient and designed to address functional deficits and restore function. Our ultimate goal is to transition your aquatic therapy to a traditional land based program with eventual transition to a home program emphasizing patient independence. The aquatic pool is also included as part of our Aftercare program, allowing discharged patients to continue their independent exercise routines. Who may be appropriate for Aquatic Physical Therapy? Patients with: Post-operative pain and/or weakness Arthritis Athletic injuries Knee, hip, or shoulder pain Chronic pain Fall risk/balance deficiencies/gait dysfunctions Decreased exercise tolerance on land Other diagnoses and conditions may be appropriate after an individualized evaluation.
