Originally brought to the Lowcountry from East Africa in the late 1700’s, the benne seed (Sesamum Indicum) was thought to hold the secrets of health and good luck. Commonly planted on plantations and used in old southern recipes, the seed quickly became a new favorite.
Its rich, sweet, nutty taste is unmistakable. And although it’s still extensively used in a variety of Lowcountry recipes, its most-loved form is the Benne Wafer. Our thin, crisp wafer cookies are adapted from traditional, time-tested recipes and produced in our own bakery by hand for a truly authentic flavor.
