Columbia, S.C, April , 2016 – Dry eye is one of the most common complaints ophthalmologists hear about in the course of their work. Confirming the presence of this condition and getting to its root cause is critical for helping doctors ease or even eliminate their patients’ symptoms. A new technological advancement, known as TearLab, is making the diagnostic process more efficient and accurate. The team at The Eye Center is pleased to announce this technology is now available to its patients.
“Dry eye is a very common and often easy-to-treat complaint patients have,” explain the doctors at The Eye Center. “It occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough tears or the consistency of those tears is inadequate to properly lubricate the eye. When that occurs, patients may experience stinging, burning, discomfort, blurred vision and sometimes pain.”
Dry eye is known to have a number of root causes that range from easy to eliminate to chronic issues that demand ongoing care. Some prescription medications, hormone therapy, pregnancy, contact lenses and a host of other issues can bring on symptoms. In some cases, however, patients suffer from dry eye disease and may require specific care to reduce symptoms.
“This is where TearLab comes in,” the doctors say. “This diagnostic tool quickly and accurately measures the consistency of tears. This, in turn, enables us to more readily and accurately diagnose dry eye disease so proper management can begin.”
TearLab is a breakthrough technology that enables doctors, in the comfort of their own offices, to collect tear samples and test them using a specialized test card. The readings provided enable doctors to discern almost immediately if a patient’s tears are within the normal consistency range or if consistency demonstrates mild, moderate or severe dry eye.
“Patients with dry eye don’t have to suffer with the symptoms,” the doctors say. “The key to alleviating them, however, lies in determining the severity and the cause. TearLab helps accomplish this quickly.”
