There are a number of school issues that we handle. In expulsion cases, students are entitled to an informal review before a hearing officer. It is important if you want a lawyer’s help to get an appointment quickly since these hearings are scheduled shortly after the initial suspension. Before the hearing you can request the packet of information which will usually includes statements made by students, teachers or the principal about what your child has done to warrant an expulsion recommendation.
In bullying cases we recommend that a journal of events be kept at home detailing each serious incident and include any attempts to get help from school officials. If doctors or counselors are involved be sure your child tells these professionals about the bullying. Sometimes kids tend to hide what happened but this is usually a mistake. If a child is interviewed about a bullying incident the parent should be present.
For students with disabilities the federal law (IDEA) is in place to provide guidance. Usually when you come in to see us you will already have an IEP or 504 plan in place which has not been followed. Remember for your IEP meetings to consider making a tape recording of the meeting. That recording should be made openly. Also if you do not agree with the plan presented, don’t sign it.
