Air conditioning is a must in the Charleston area. Air conditioners work on the same basic principles as your refrigerator, which uses energy (usually electricity) to transfer heat from the cool interior of the refrigerator to the warm surroundings of your home. Similarly, and air conditioner uses energy to transfer the heat from inside your home to the exterior. The two most common types of central air conditioning system are packaged systems and split systems. In a packaged Air conditioning unit, the evaporator, condenser, and compressor are all located in one cabinet. This unit is usually installed on a slab or a stand adjacent to the home. A split system is composed of two pieces; the outdoor condensing unit, which contains the compressor and condensing coil and the indoor unit, which contains the evaporator coil and blower. Both of the systems distribute air throughout the home with a duct system. A third air conditioning option is the ductless system. This highly efficient system can provide even greater comfort levels and can be installed where conventional ducted systems cannot. Today’s most efficient air conditioning systems use 30-50% less energy to provide the same amount of cooling as those produced in the 70’s. According to the US Department of Energy, even if your current air conditioning system is only 10 years old, you can save 20-40% by upgrading to a newer, more efficient model.
