In the past, most skin cancers were treated by removing all cancer cells as well as a margin of healthy cells. Fortunately for people who have skin cancer today there is a much better technique for treating skin cancer. It is called Mohs Surgery or Mohs Microscopic Surgery. Doctors now consider this to be the most effective treatment for cancer. This technique increases the chances of a cure or the best prognosis for patients. Mohs surgery removes skin cancer a layer at a time. Each layer is carefully looked at under a high powered microscope before another layer is removed. This is repeated until only healthy cells remain. By using this technique at his Austin office, Dr. Snavely insures that patients lose the smallest amount of skin possible.
