The founder of PET/CT at Las Colinas discusses the benefits of CT scans for diagnostic screening.
Irving, TX, Sept 15, 2015 – As the leading cancer killer in the United States, lung cancer is serious business that demands serious measures to enable earlier detection and faster treatment should the disease present. Screening protocols have changed to that end, but not everyone eligible for new testing is aware of the benefits they can deliver.
“Recommendations have changed for those at the highest risk for developing lung cancer,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “Long-term smokers, for example, may now find their insurance companies more than willing to pay for annual low-dose CT scans instead of more limited X-rays. The change is profound in that it may pave the way for many lung cancer patients to discover tumors earlier, potentially paving the way for more effective treatments.”
Those eligible for the new testing protocols are generally between the ages of 55 and 80. The test is geared toward long-term smokers – those who have smoked at least a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years. The hope is that more effective CT scans will enable doctors to detect lung cancers at their earliest stages when annual screenings are provided. Medicare has approved the change in testing procedures and many other insurance companies are now following suit.
“CT scans have been proven highly effective for spotting tumors much earlier than X-rays are able,” says Dr. Echt. “Those who undergo routine screening, in fact, are much less likely to die from the disease than their counterparts who forego the tests.”
To find out more about low-dose CT scans for lung cancer screening, check with a healthcare provider. This early screening may prove essential for helping lower the mortality rate currently attributed to this disease.
