The founder of PET/CT at Las Colinas discusses the benefits of CT scans for diagnostic screening.

Irving, TX, Aug 12,2015– Smokers worried about the potential for lung cancer will find one particular screening test stands above another common procedure for finding this disease early. Research is showing that CT scans deliver a more reliable look inside the body to locate this disease than typical X-rays commonly offered as a first line of defense.

“While a typical X-ray can offer some insights into the potential presence of lung cancer, CT scans are simply able to detect abnormalities more readily and often much earlier,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder of PET/CT of Las Colinas. “By enabling a more in-depth look inside the body, CT screens provide a more accurate way to detect tumor formation and other soft tissue abnormalities.”

The results of a recent national study that drew on data from the National Lung Cancer Screening trial are shedding light on the superiority of the CT scan versus standard X-rays. Though the technologies are similar, CT scans are able to produce a multi-image scan of the entire chest that results in a clearer picture of potential problem areas. The study showed patients who tested positive for lung cancer who underwent CT scans had a 15 to 20 percent lower chance of dying from the disease that those who underwent X-rays and were ultimately diagnosed with the disease down the road. The difference, researchers noted, is because CT scans are able to more readily find lung cancer in its early – more treatable – stage than an X-ray.

“As lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer death, those at risk may want to inquire about screening tests that go beyond standard X-rays,” says Dr. Echt. “It’s best to discuss this disease and personal risk factors directly with your healthcare provider.”
