Your eyelid skin thins as it ages, and quite often becomes loose and begins to droop because of gravity, causing "bags." Blepharoplasty is a procedure that tightens the droopy eyelids and restores the contour of your eyelids. Excess fat, skin, and occasionally muscle are removed from the eyelids in order to make them appear "younger looking." Reasons To Consider You want to change the appearance of your eyes. You are having a facelift. You wish to correct the hooding of your upper eyelids. Blepharoplasty takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to perform for both the upper and lower lids. First, your eyes are anesthetized with drops, and then protective lenses are placed over them during surgery. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty involves an incision across the eyelid crease, which is done to remove excess skin and a thin strip of muscle -- which gives the crease more definition. Fatty tissue may be removed or reduced before the incision is closed, leaving a hidden scar within the natural fold of your eyelids. Lower eyelids are essentially done the same way. with the incision being made slightly below the lower eyelashes. Fatty tissue, skin, and muscle are trimmed or removed, and the incision is then closed with self-dissolving sutures, or sutures which need to be removed 3-5 days after the procedure. RECOVERING FROM THIS SURGERY Post-procedure recovery for blepharoplasty usually lasts two weeks. Thin bandages are applied to the eyelids, as well as an ointment to prevent dryness, during the first few days following the operation. Swelling and bruising can be expected during the first week or so, but it usually subsides quickly. Your eyelids may feel tight and sore as the anesthesia begins to wear off, but over-the-counter medicine can be used to alleviate the pain. You will be able to read, use a computer, and watch television after two or three days. Most individuals feel ready and able to go out in public after about 10 days of recovery. A little make-up can be used to conceal all bruises around the eyes. Scars will remain slightly visible for a few months following the surgery but will eventually fade to a thin, almost invisible, white line.

Cleft, Lip & Palate

One in every 800 children, however, don't develop correctly, leaving them with a separation in the upper lip -- known as the "Cleft Lip." A similar birth defect in the roof of the mouth (or palate) is known as a "Cleft Palate" and is just as common.
