Plano, TX, – A strong link between obesity and certain types of cancer has long been established. Researchers are finding, however, that weight loss surgery may help those who are considered at high risk lower their cancer chances while also improving health overall. The findings of a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Virginia Cancer Center showed promising results for patients who shed pounds following surgical intervention.
“The study indicated that weight loss surgery may very well help those at high risk for obesity-related cancers improve their chances of avoiding the disease,” says Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas-based Nicholson Clinic, one of the top weight loss surgery centers in the country. “This is tremendously encouraging for those who find their exposure increased due to weight.”
The study involved an estimated 71 women with a mean age of about 44.2 years. All women involved had a mean body mass index of 50.8 at the start of the study. Women included in the subject group were followed for several years with most participants enjoying a weight loss of 100 pounds or more following surgery. Researchers also noted that women in the study who had precancerous changes in their uterine linings prior to surgery saw this concern reverse as the pounds came off.
“While the study group was small, the results are quite promising for women who find themselves at risk for endometrial and other weight-related cancers,” Dr. Nicholson says. “This simply adds to the ever-growing body of evidence that shows losing weight can have dramatic, positive impacts on health overall.”
In addition to the reversal of precancerous changes, researchers also noted a number of other benefits in their study group. Most of the women saw their insulin levels improve as the pounds were shed, reported improvements in their quality of life and saw positive changes in the composition of their gut bacteria, as well.
