The founder of the Nicholson Clinic for Weight Loss Surgery offers advice for staying on track.
Plano, TX, March, 2015 – Dr. Nick Nicholson, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas-based Nicholson Clinic, one of the top weight loss surgery centers in the country, understands that losing weight doesn’t always come easy for people. With that in mind, he offers advice for getting started on a weight loss plan.
“Whether you’re out to lose 20 pounds or 200, it is important to remember weight loss is a process that simply does not happen overnight,” Dr. Nicholson says. “Even if you’ve undergone weight loss surgery, it is critical to keep expectations realistic and to anticipate only a gradual loss of pounds rather than overnight success.”
Ensuring success in weight loss requires dedication and a willingness to stick to a plan. With that in mind, Dr. Nicholson offers these three simple steps that can make staying on track easier:
1. Set realistic goals – This, Dr. Nicholson says, is crucial for ensuring disappointment is kept out of the equation. “Anticipating a drop of 1 or 2 pounds a week on a normal, healthy diet is realistic,” Dr. Nicholson says. “Expecting to lose 10 pounds weekly is not only unrealistic it’s unhealthy over the long haul.”
2. Keep the plan healthy – Fad diets might work in the short-term, but their overall results tend to be a reemergence of the weight lost. Rather than adopt an unhealthy “crash diet,” Dr. Nicholson recommends people strive to eat a healthy, balanced diet that fuels the body without overfilling it. When a healthy, tasty diet is adopted, it can become a part of normal lifestyle, which means keeping the weight off is likely to become easier. “If you’re not sure what or how much to eat, be sure to consult with your doctor,” he adds.
3. Get support – Family, friends and co-workers can be incredible sources of support during a weight loss effort. Be sure to enlist help from those around you.
“Remember, weight loss is only the first step to better health,” Dr. Nicholson concludes. “Once that weight is off, keeping it off by adopting a healthier, more active lifestyle is also important.”
